Do You Start With Seeds, Clones or Mothers?

Moms generally aren't for sale. You can definitely buy seeds. You can buy them everywhere, all around the world. With the new Farm Bill Act that just passed last January,  you can buy and sell cannabis seeds all across the U.S. now, legally. Seeds have no THC in them, they're all hemp seeds until they sprout and start producing THC. So that's really cool.

On the other hand, you cannot transport clones across state lines. You cannot buy or sell clones across state lines, that's illegal. That's trafficking a Schedule 1 narcotic. So if you’re spinning up a new grow in Michigan and your plan is to buy all these clones from Nevada and ship them in to Michigan, that is Schedule 1 drug trafficking and you will go to federal prison for that.

There was actually just a guy this happened to, some multimillionaire or billionaire. He flew his private jet down to St Thomas or one of those Caribbean islands. His jet was full of clones and cannabis because he thought he could just do it and get away with it because it's his own private jet. He got busted when he landed and he went to prison. So you cannot transport the actual plants across state lines. It’s illegal. Seeds you can, but I would highly recommend you talk to a lawyer, don't take my advice on that.

You have to start out from seeds or clones. When you start from a clone, put it into soil, and start growing it, within four weeks you'll have a fully vegetative plant that you can flip and bloom. Then four to eight weeks after that, you'll harvest. So in three months, you can harvest and have bud. Now from a seed to harvest of sellable flower, you're looking at realistically eight months. I skipped over a bunch of steps that you have to do when mothering up and all these other steps. If you got your license and you’re starting from seed, you're not going to have anything sellable for eight months.

In that eight months you have to pay for all your personnel, your rent, electric, water, insurance, licenses and everything. Plus, eight months is two thirds of your license time, so you're going to have to renew four months later. Your licensing fee renewals cost around $30-50,000, and you’ve got to pay that all over again four months later. So your first year, you're not going to make money as a grow. It's not going to happen. In fact, you will lose money. It's hard to make money in the first year or two. The first two years it’s hard, and around three years, you'll start making money as a  grow.
